Though the result was a loss, there was something valuable I took away from this game. In the midst of chaos, Gerrit Cole never lost his focus.

The Yankees led 5-0, with Cole pitching a perfect game through four innings. Then, Aaron Judge missed a routine fly to center. A series of defensive mistakes loaded the bases with no outs. Cole took charge, striking out Lux and Ohtani to try to defuse the situation, but Rizzo’s misplay allowed a run, and Freeman and Teoscar followed with hits, tying the game at 5-5.

Under pressure, he didn’t break.

In what was effectively an elimination game—their potential last of the season—the Yankees’ flawless 5-0 lead unraveled in seconds due to defensive lapses. But Cole stayed composed, focusing on every pitch. Watching the highlights, it might seem as though he lost his grip on the game. Yet, in reality, he kept his cool and fought through each batter, despite the mounting frustration of those costly errors.

In the end, this game became their final of the season. But for me, Cole’s focus was the most impressive of the year. He showed the essence of a true professional. This reflection is my tribute to his unshakeable focus, even in the midst of chaos.
